For those who dont know, Frances Farmer was an American film actress, contemporary with Bette Davis, Greta Garbo and Talulah Bankhead, who had a very public breakdown and was committed to an asylum. Her life story has since provided a rich picking ground for writers, filmmakers, musicians and the like. Jangle pop outfit, the Passengers, add their two ha'porth with this 1988 classic. In truth, the song has little to do with Frances Farmer other than a name check, but it is one of those numbers which bounces along.
Jangle pop may be a bit of mystery to many Americans on this site, but in the UK it marked what is often called the Second Indie Revolution (the first being punk rock a decade earlier). The Passengers were one of any number of bands who rose, issued a single and then went back into obscurity. And is their obscurity deep! No idea of the record label or any information about the band exists on the internet. Gathering up as many singles from this era is a trip down memory lane.
