Most would agree most popular artists out there have something truly special to give to their fans. This goes above the typical attributes like raw talent, amazing songs, nice voice, or even a very marketable look, sound and image. There's something truly infectious at the core of these artists that simply makes us feel good when we listen to them. Whatever "it" is - they all seem to have "it".
Today I spun the latest EP from Hawaii (Kauai) singer/songwriter/guitarist Phil Jones (Rasie Up - 2011). Venturing to his FACEBOOK and reading his bio I get the impression he is one songwriter that is extremely passionate about the songwriting craft. From start to finish this EP from Jones and his band is a very uplifting, pleasurable and entertaining. It has a very soothing Classic Rock, R&B quality to it and even dabbles in hooky Beach Pop. Any fans of any of these musical styles will enjoy this latest release from Jones. It's clearly marketed for those who like a male singer with a mystique of say a Rob Thomas, Michael Stipe (R.E.M) and even Mudcrutch. I get the impression Jones is rolling with what he knows as a performer within each one of these songs. In other words he hits the mark remarkably well by just being who he is. Favorite tracks include (Perfect Wave) and (Are You Aligned). All songs possess amazing feel. The songwriting digs a bit deeper than the typical Independent Artist. Within each one of these songs Jones bares his soul and delivers his best musical mojo. His band is spot on and backs him up very well. The overall vibe of the production is very upbeat and positive in nature.
My only criticism - I would recommend Jones get a vocal coach and improve on his overall vocal flow and tonality. It's such a true statement that a great vocalist can hold your attention span singing the dictionary and without a band in the background. Jones needs to take this on and take the edge off his raspy voice. Because the vocals are a bit foggy the true personality of Jones doesn't shine through thus not reaching it's full potential. If Jones can improve on this front he will have himself a real winner.
I see Jones as a diamond in the rough. As time goes by he will no doubt refine and fine-tune his overall sound and overall musical personality. I am eager to hear what his next release will sound like. In close most famous artists out there have "it" I'm not so sure what it but Phil Jones definitely has whatever "it" may be.
