This is a sweet slab of psychedelia that I almost missed from last year. The Shins are a New Mexico based band that caught the ear of Sub Pop’s Jonathan Poneman while they were on tour with Modest Mouse. Once Poneman had a listen to the band’s live show he immediately offered them a deal on Sub Pop. This is after a very lengthy ramp-up. The band was originally called Flake but later changed their name to The Shins. On the very creative and original Oh, Inverted World, the Shins manage to do what bands like Apples In Stereo have been trying to perfect for so long in one take. The music has many layers and each listen provides more things popping out into your conscience. They have borrowed ideas from the Lilys but twisted them into something that they can call their own. There are plenty of harmonies to go around and the jangly guitars are professionally executed. Fans of the Elephant Six bands will enjoy the Shins as well as fans of the psychedelic era of the 60’s. Jonathan did us a favor in bringing the Shins to a wider audience.

Quite clear, really; great band with a great sound. Although I find this to be the weakest of their three records, it's still as good as good can be without being great. They have matured into a much more efficient pop-rock outfit, bringing to mind the Beach Boys, Sweet Applie Pie and bands of their ilk. While Oh, Inverted World would make a fine piece in anyone's collection, their later albums should be considered first I think.
