Multi-instrumentalist Fred Cornog records under the name of East River Pipe, a name he got from watching the sewage pour into New York's East River from a large pipe. His is truly a wondrous tale. Drink, drugs and depression drove him to the bottom. He was discovered, homeless, sleeping in Hoboken train station, by a record producer. She recognised his talent and set him on a path which would eventually lead to a record deal.
As you would expect from his life story, Cornog's music is redolent with the themes of his life. "Make a Deal with the City" is one of his earliest efforts and, in my view, his best by far. Dominated by that haunting guitar sound, this is a track which lingers long after it has ended and deserves a lot more recognition than it has achieved.
