Cowboy Junkies are one of those oft forgotten bands that a more talented than most others on the market right now. Some may remember their somber Trinity Sessions album with the beautiful rendition of “Sweet Jane. A few less will remember the brilliant Pale Sun, Crescent Moon, which was had a bit of a sunnier disposition. Now that Cowboy Junkies have shaken off the remains of Geffen Records and have moved on (they are being distributed on their own label in Canada, Latent, courtesy of Universal and Zoe/Rounder in the US) they are about to embark on the most exciting time of their career. Open could arguably be the best Cowboy Junkies to date. What the band has done is combine their quiet material with the more happy-go-lucky stuff that you may have heard on Pale Sun. When you get to “I’m So Open you will see a band at its finest with a bit of an Allman Brother’s Band feel to it. Don’t worry about the quiet songs because they are all here and as heartfelt as ever. Margo Timmin’s vocals are as solid as they have ever been and the band is really at its finest.
