The Goths never appealed to, nor intended to appeal to the mainstream. They were far more content with occupying their own dark corner of life where they could revel in their gloom. Yet every rule has an exception to justify it, and Zero le Creche provided that exception. Goths they were, and with those ridiculous, dragged-backwards-through-a-bush eighties hairstyles they could not be mistaken for anything else, but theirs was a Goth which flirted with pop. This was a novel, even brave move, for ne'er the twain should truly meet.

"Last Year's Wife" was typical of their output, although it was far and away their best number. Half way between early Bauhaus and mid-period Psychedleic Furs, the song is unusually catchy for the Goths and deserves a revisit now by those who wish to explore more of Britain's vibrant music scene in the first half of the eighties. Yet they never broke out of a narrow niche for Zero le Creche were not a band which the mainstream would pick up on, despite an attempt to generate a wider appeal. They released two singles and then faded away into oblivion like so many before and after them. A 2004 compilation is their belated contribution to the album scene.
