Unfortunately these nu-gazers (as they are often known) do not often stray far from their roots in the UK in the early and mid nineties. "Trees" is a typical such piece from the rather lacklustre EP of the same from the Thrushes. While it is a good song, it could so easily have been drawn from the catalogue of bands like Slowdive or the Pale Saints. The vocals are pushed back and there are layers of dense guitars, distorted and shadowy. The rest of the tracks do not depart much from the formula already established, and the cover of Mazzy Star's "Fade into You" offers little which the original did not have. Had Thrushes been around in 1990 they would have probably had more recognition than they are likely to get now. If they don't start putting some originality into their music I don't really seeing them get very far.
