Slaid Cleaves proves his worth on his second album for Philo records, Broke Down. This Austin singer/songwriter fits right in along side of most of the "other" true country/folk artist like Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen and Lucinda Williams. They all have that bit of lonesome twang that they seem at home with. Slaid is no exception with his mostly depressing songs like "Cold and Lonely" and "Breakfast in hell". It suprises me that alot of the artists that make appearances on these types of records like Buddy and Julie Miller and Emmylou Harris don't show up at all. Then again Slaid sounds quite content being all alone with his little band. This album is highly recommended.
