Probably the most un-Smiths sounding song the Smiths ever put out, this is also one of their best second only behind "Panic" in my view. The expected lightweight jangly guitars are nowhere to be found, and instead the sound is dominated by long, moody, tremeloed guitar chord which serves as the song's motif throughout. It was also un-Smiths like in that if you tried to dance to it you would embarrassingly fall flat on your face - literally and metaphorically.
The Smiths specialised in a sort of no one likes me, I dont care (but it really hurts deep down) kind of music which fitted the times perfectly, and appealed to every lonely teenage boy across the country - and beyond. Johnny Marr matches Morrisey's melancholy voice perfectly and the result is one of the best songs of its kind. Like "Panic" this one was left out of the contemporaneous album, though "Well I Wonder", the b-side, is one of the better tracks off "Meat Is Murder".
