Under normal circumstances I would avoid mainstream pop of the kind which Adele, on first impressions, would seem to issue. But first impressions can often be mistaken impressions, and I will not shy from holding my hand up when I am wrong. For someone who is only 21 years old, and whose album of that number comprises a series of songs which relate to concerns she experienced in her life around that time, I admit, I am wrong. "Someone Like You" is, quite simply, way ahead of Adele's tender years. The song is full of heartfelt emotion, sincere and without bitterness for the loss of a previous relationship. A simple song, just piano and voice, is as far away from the inanities of Lady Gaga and Britney as you could hope to find. And what a voice! Adele has a rich, smooth voice with enough huskiness in it to make you think you are listening to some considerably older (black) soul singer, weary with age, whiskey and cigarettes. If Adele can keep this sort of performance up then she has one hell of a future ahead of her.
