Jonathan Richman was a strange character. He looked like the typical boy next door but had a voice which could cut concrete. He sings with the detachment and disaffection of someone who is a part of something he does not want to be associated with. And underneath, the same chords play over and over again without a hint of change in tempo, rhythm or key. It doesn't matter whether you play it loud or quiet, the song drills its way into your head and stays there. Comparisons with "Sister Ray" are inevitable. Although Richman and the Modern Lovers were no punks, this was the ideal punk song as once you had mastered the first ten seconds you had mastered the whole song.
