Caitlin Cary is the other main contributor of the sadly overlooked Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams being the poster boy for the band. Now Caitlin is out in front with no safety net to save her and she proves to her admiring public that she is a very apt songwriter and singer. It’s really amazing to hear the differences between Cary and Adams. Adams is a heartbroken rock country artist while Caitlin’s music is even more graniose and well thought out. I wouldn’t say it’s better but only different. It must have been the play off of the two of these songwriters that made Whiskeytown such a treat. The album opens up with the beautiful “Shallow Heart, Shallow Water, which happens to be the albums strongest song. For any of you Whiskeytown fans out there who enjoyed the other part of the band should investigate this album. While You Weren’t Looking will also appeal to fans of female country singers like Neko Case and contemporaries Cowboy Junkies. Caitlin Cary’s voice is one too fall in love with. She won’t desert you like her band members seem to do.
