Dragon are a band which never failed to court controversy. They had all sorts of run-ins with various people and groups: linked to a major south-east Asian drug smuggling ring; had several one-time members die; and got pelted off stage in Texas for calling the audience faggots. Yet, this long-lived New Zealand outfit (though two of the members were Australian) did manage to retain their popularity in the antipodes. The band was also something of a chameleon, having been described as everything from prog rockers to punks. Yet their biggest 1983 hit, "Rain", was a melodic post-punk influenced number which deserved more than the local success it achieved. Too often musical parochialism has denied worthy bands of greater success, and Dragon are a case in point.
