REM's most commercial release, perhaps because it accompanied the release of the 1992 film of the same name about the life of Andy Kaufmann. The song itself makes numerous references to Kaufmann, including his Elvis impersonation. What really makes this interesting is that the whole track title, lyrics and even the video - can be seen as a commentary on the conspiracy theory that the moon landings were faked, seen as a parody of the conspiracy theory that Andy Kaufmann's own death in 1984, from lung cancer, was faked and that Kaufmann, like the Elvis he impersonated, is actually alive and well and serving chilli dogs in a diner in Witchita.
Irrespective of the nonsensical background to the song, which I have described above as a matter of passing interest, "Man on the Moon" remains one of REM's better single releases. I flipped in and out of love with REM during the eighties and nineties but this song was definitely reflective of a moment where I flipped in.
