In the days before pop music split into the two camps of mainstream and outside the mainstream, there was just music. Music was defined by whether it was good or bad. Good music lasted. Bad music faded. Nearly fifty years on, there cannot be many people who are completely unfamiliar with the melody and guitar sound of "Oh Pretty Woman". Add in a thumping drum and what results is one of those classics which never seems to go out of fashion. Orbison's distinctive voice, reaching near falsetto moments at times, adds a special flavour to the song. But to me, this just conjures up an age of innocence, girls in frilly skirts and pony tails and clean-cut, short-haired guys with pastel sweaters. An American image I know, but so ubiquitous is it in western culture that this song will always have a lasting place of prominence in pop music history.
