When this was initially released it pretty much flopped as single. That in some ways was quite surprising for it is not a bad song if the truth be told. Not a great one I will admit, but I have heard a lot worse from U2 over the years. It is a slower song than many of their singles and has that slow build up to a climax which was beloved by the band in the late eighties and early nineties and went down well as an anthem to be sung, holding your cigarette lighter aloft, in the arena. Very much a song in the mould of their greatest work of the period. The main problem with it is that it comes across as more like a hymn as Bono gets on his high horse once again and tells all, in the vaguest possible terms, how to solve the ills of the world.
What surprised me, and I am sure I was not the only one, was that a couple of years ago this was voted the greatest single of all time by some magazine or other. Like I said, it wasnt THAT good. I guess it must have appealed to more people than I thought.
