The Mamas and the Papas were an indispensible part of the psychedelic hippie pop culture of the late sixties. Their particular brand of happy, feel-good music, mixed with a tinge of the sombre, and delivered with clean male and female vocal harmonies was pretty much defining of the age in which they flourished. This single may have predated the Summer of Love by a year but it has all the hallmarks of 1967 and San Francisco written all over it. Perhaps that why it sounds so dated now. "Monday Monday" is without doubt their best single, and is probably the best you will find of this type of music. Of course it is part of its age, and anyone hearing it can only think of the sixties for it fits no other time. But if for no other reason than pure nostalgia, it is worth having in your collection.
