When I think of all that I disliked about the non-mainstream music of the seventies the Doobie Brothers spring to mind. They were a non-mainstream band (at least in the UK) who were trying desperately hard to be mainstream. They were up there with the Eagles and Steely Dan, that west coast USA laid-back, let's go lie in the sun and drink ice cold Budweiser while leering at chicks with bleach-blonde hair sort of soft-on-the-ear which really used to annoy me. Friends of mine had Doobie Brothers albums and I couldn't listen to them without wanting to scream.
But time is a healer. I still hate the Doobie Brothers, but this one song just got played and played and played in the circles I moved into in the mid seventies. And for that it is worth a mention.
