English folk music has often suffered from a bad rap. Mention it to most English people and it will conjure up visions of morris dancers and some Worzel Gummidge with a straw in his mouth, wearing a linen smock and going "ooh aar" every ten seconds. Such a ridiculous parody is a cross many English folk musicians have had to bear and Lindisfarne were no exception.
Named after the monastery on Holy Isle of the Northumberland, Lindisfarne were probably the most popular and successful English folk acts to emerge in the 1960s and hang around until the seventies. "Lady Eleanor" was their most well-known song and a great one to boot. Carrying with it almost prog overtones of the stereotypical lady in white, it was an infectious hook and some wonderfully expressive lyrics.
Lindisfarne used to do a reunion concert every Christmas in their native Toon, but I havent heard of it being done for a few years. I wonder what happened?
