Like a lot of Muddy Waters' greatest tracks, "I Just Want to Make Love to You" was written by Willie Dixon. Originally recorded in 1954 it was re-recorded by Waters in 1968. In spite of Waters' blues roots, this song has one of the least blues like chorus lines you are ever likely to encounter - perhaps that is what makes it so special.
The list of artists who have covered this is phenomenal everyone from the Grateful Dead to April Wine. Etta James 1961 cover was re-released in the UK in 1996 after featuring as the backing music to a Diet Coke ad and made it to number one, something I find immeasurably sad. After all, these were great tracks and their association with cheap commercialism really pisses me off at times.
