Post-punk was to develop a reputation for sombre, even depressing songs. This mood was rooted in the socio-political circumstances of the time and the failure of punk really to change anything. Now while post-punk garnered that reputation, the Smiths, the most-commercially successful of the post-punks, took it one step further. Morrissey adopted a sexless persona and wrote songs which were not just depressing or sombre, but which highlighted misery as an integral part of their make up. Nowhere was this more evident than on this track. Backed with "Suffer Little Children", about the Moors Murderers, Brady and Hindley, this was a deliberate attempt to corner the market in miserable downbeat songs. And they achieved it. And how!
