When I first heard this, it sounded like a bad recording of a long used vinyl, full of cracks and hops which you associate with such a format. Then I realised this was deliberate. I am still not sure if this effect is a positive or a negative thing, but I refuse to let it detract from what is a thoroughly enjoyable song.
Thick with pathos and lament, the sorrowful vocals of Beth Gibbons are reminiscent of Billie Holiday at times. But what really makes this thunder is that wonderful guitar which drags itself across the speakers and bores its way, ever so slowly into your head. This is almost as if it were the blues in its execution, again drawing some comparisons with Holiday. But this single goes where none have gone before or since. Unqiue yes. If only I could get round the effects.
