I never really could get Queen doing the heavier stuff in the late seventies. They had transformed themselves from a passable rock outfit into performers who seemed as if they were destined for the stages of Las Vegas. Queen was a performance, one which revolved around Freddie Mercury. As a performance it was fine, but too often the songs, when listened to on their own, fell flat. "Sheer Heart Attack" came across as none too professional while "Spread Your Wings" was just too laid back. I suppose there is some reason why they issued such contrasting tracks as one single, but neither really did anything for me. I admit that I never actually bought this - I won it in a competition along with a whole bunch of other singles. Does that provide me with a good enough excuse?
