In the early to mid-eighties, the Psychedelic Furs were one of my favourite bands. "Talk Talk Talk" would get a pounding on the turntable due to regular play, and not far behind was the bands self-titled debut album. Yet the Furs and I slowly drifted apart. The reason for this was the band split into two distinct personalities - the London based half who stuck to their post-punk roots, and the New York based half who chased fame in the US charts. This dichotomy rent the band in two, and in later years, the line up changed with every album. Eventually, by the end of the decade, the Furs and I parted company.
Yet the band could occasionally come up with a track which was well worth listening to and "All That Money Wants" was one such track. Their post punk influences are apparent on the song, yet it is more commercially oriented than I would normally like. Butler's voice still sounds as distinctive and as careless as ever. But it is good to be reminded that a once favoured artist can still put out a good number every now and then.
