Excellent late era Smiths which displays Morrissey at his very best. Never mind that by now Johnny Marr was smashed out of his head on smack most of the time, the vacuum he left was more than ably filled by Morrissey for whom the Smiths became totally his vehicle and presaged his soon to be solo career. As a result of this situation within the band, Morrissey was able to use it more to display his own talents, prejudices and themes. Despite the title, "Shoplifters of the World Unite" is about the need for some sort of fellowship among homosexuals: the title itself being a pun on an abusive Australian word for homosexuals - shirtlifters. This displays Morrissey at his songwriting best. But I still prefer the Smiths when Marr was a functioning component of the band.
