Powerpop was a sub genre of punk which is often overlooked or ridiculed and usually seen as a shameless attempt to gain commercial credibility. The Buzzcocks were probably the most well-known exponents but when it came to shameless pop preening, the Moondogs had them beaten hands down. This Northern Irish trio even managed to have their own television programme, " Moondogs Matinee" , broadcast during children's hour in an effort to crack the mainstream. And yet, it didn't work and the Moondogs faded from view without making an impact.
The trouble was that the Moondogs were just too damn loud for the audience their record company aimed them at. And anyone who wanted loudness would not be attracted to the Moondogs. The result was failure. And yet their songs remain as a testament to how good they could have been. " Who's Gonna Tell Mary " was shameless pop, but was bloody good for it.
