Before Rod became a dreadful parody of everything that is dislikable about a rock star; before Rod meandered off into issuing such unbelievable pap as "Dya Think I'm Sexy"; before Rod struggled to lift himself onto his zimmer frame and give us 264 albums of the "Great American Songbook"; Rod was a respected blues rock vocalist. "Maggie May" marks the transition from the latter to the former incarnation of Rod Stewart. He was not the first to describe the relationship of an older woman with a younger man (Bobby Goldsboro did something similar around the same time as this), but he perhaps delivered one of the best descriptions about it. The ultimately destructive effect it is having on the young man comes through here to great effect, yet the allure is too powerful to pull away from it. Young Rod is under no illusions, but I guess the sex is just too good. Perhaps the best loved of all Rod Stewart's songs, it still sounds good even after all these years.
