"The Breakfast Club" remains one of my favourite films of all time. There was something about the eighties which lent itself to that sort of teenage, high school, rite of passage film which really appealed to me. Even though I had been disappointed by the direction Simple Minds had taken, I could not but help like the song which had such a significant musical input into that film.
This was not the Simple Minds of "The American" or even of "Waterfront". The band had moved in a direction towards more mainstream pop, as if following in the footsteps of U2 whose success they desperately wanted to emulate. Yet, the song was still able to capture the mood of the moment as much, and probably more than any other of its day. This was, after all, the eighties. And whenever one looks back at music of then eighties, it will be this song which springs instantly to the minds of many.
