This was the Police's mega hit. If they will be remembered for anything it will be this rather melodramatic song. Though still just about discernable, their original white reggae roots were beginning to fade. Strangely, though I loved it when it came out, and let's be fair, who didn't, I play it less nowadays in comparison to the three singles off their first album. Too overproduced and without the stark beauty of the singles released off their first album, this was the Police appealing to the American MTV mass market. The appeal worked and the Police gained the fame and riches which went with commercial success worldwide. Yet how many of those who adored it knew that it is actually a rather sinister song about stalking an ex?
