I had no idea what to expect with the Atomic 7 album. It hit my desk in it’s unassuming bright red cover and hit my CD player with no expectations whatsoever. The album kicked off with “Chock Full O’ Notes� with a very cool reverb-ed rockabilly guitar sound and the album didn’t really let up from there. You may remember Brian Connelly from Shadowy Men a long time ago. This is his new project after briefly flirting with Neko Case as one of her Boyfriends. As was Shadowy Men, Atomic 7 is all instrumental and man does this stuff rock. The three piece band has no problem with Connelly’s brilliant compositions. He makes it seem like this music just appears out of nowhere but Edith Head is totally amazing. The guitar playing is awesome and is comparable to that of The Reverend himself. Clinton Ryder plays the upright bass like nobodies business and Mike Andreosso keeps time on the drums and keeps it interesting. Atomic 7 is a bit of a twist on traditional rockabilly stuff but these musicians are top notch and should appeal to any fan of the genre. They throw the surf rock into the mix by way of the Ventures and it really adds to the overall sound. Edith Head is a great debut.
