Carrying on in the tradition of Darol Anger's contributions to the David Grisman Quintet the newly founded Anger Marshall band brings us a great new Jazzgrass album. Even though the band uses traditional instrument like the violin and mandolin they still are able to inflect jazz overtones on their primarily bluegrass style. They showcase their technical abilites right beside their great songwriting skills as shown by the 10 original tracks on Brand New Can. It would be easy to give this sort of treatment to old classics but the group has chose to stick to self-penned tracks. Their label mistress, Alison Brown, is found picking a mighty tune with her banjo on the opening track "Coal Burning Grease Fire". This album should help Anger and Marshall to prove that they are here to stay in the new acoustic music category.
