There have been numerous rumours floating around that the mysterious Whiskeytown album that was dropped when Outpost records folded may yet see the light of day. I'm sure Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown's creative force, doesn't care either way as you can tell with his first solo album for Bloodshot. Not only does it feature the talents of Ryan but David Rawlings and Gillian Welch are members of the album's band. And what would a No Depression album be without the appearance of the ever busy Emmylou Harris (on the soul bearing track "Oh My Sweet Carolina"). But the music, oh the music. Ryan is in fine songwriting form on Heartbreaker feeling right at home doing most of the penning himself (save one track co-written with Rawlings). For the most part, the tracks are downtrodden laments to loved ones, except for album opener "To Be Young" which, to be frank, rocks. In a time of a No Depression depression Ryan Adams keeps the homefires burning and our hopes and hearts satisfied for a little longer.
