This is, in many ways, downright odd. Mix in hippie psychedelia and evangelical Christianity and this is what you end up with, A plea to all drugged out hippies everywhere to make their peace with Jesus before they overdose, it was all the more weird because if one-hit wonder Norman Greenbaum was from a Jewish German family which settled in Massachussets. Yet if you ignore the lyrics, what you have is still a great rhythm and a great track. This has been subjected to a few covers in later years, some of them quite atrocious, but the original has never been bettered.
