Big Joe Williams is perhaps most famous for his style of blues playing. He used a nine-string guitar plucked with picks on both his thumb and index finger and hung an empty beer can in front of the amp so that it rattled, producing an early kind of fuzz box. "Little Leg Woman" was one of his earliest recordings, though he had been playing the blues since the twenties in a series of combos, one or two of which made it to record. In appearance he looked ramshackle, but when he played he could electrify an audience. His novel style never caught on, however, and he remains one of the most unique delta blues singers of his generation.
