On this great Smithsonian compilation Jack Straw has taken studio recordings from 1995-1998 from Ghana, Kenya, Republic of Congo, and Zimbabwe and created a superb cd. The surprising thing about this disc is that is all done by African Immigrants all living in the United States. As well, they manage to do authentic African music too. This album is a real gem and will provide the listener with a truly unique world music experience. The music is quality stuff and will appeal to almost anyone interested in African roots music. It seems as though the group of immigrants is able to band together to keep traditions alive; something that doesn't happen enough. One of the highlights of this strong disc is the soukous guitar work. There is a strong representation of afro-pop sounds too. Overall this is a great compilation.
