It is a difficult task to review one of the best-loved and most played songs of all time. Most people come to it with their own preconceived ideas as to what it should be and how it should find its place in the canon of significant musical moments, that to give it anything less than the highest praise seems too iconoclastic.
Yes, it is a good song. It has a spiritual level to it which makes it seem almost religious. Yet it is not preachy - this is not a hymn. The combination of piano and voice is what really makes the song memorable, which is just as well, because sometimes the lyrics do slip into the absurd. Art Garfunkel's voice sounds great, but the words he has to use sometimes lack consistency of imagery. The concept of reaching out over troubled times for unity is great, but the song doesn't rhyme as much as it perhaps ought and sometimes it doesn't scan either.
Still, I'm not going to knock this just because it's there. It is, and remains a damn good piece of music and deserves its classic status.
