Often, singles released from concept albums do not do as well as might be expected because they become taken out of context. Ray Davies' paean to British rural life produced this single from the album of the same name but did not fall into that trap. Once the Kinks got that inexplicable ban from the US, they found themselves cut off from a key source of musical inspiration and turned into the quintessentially British band - not that it would have bothered Davies to be so.
In fact this turned out to be more of a success, ultimately, than the Kinks would have anticipated. The quirky nostalgia had an easily identifiable connection with Britons, who recognised much about it as familiar, while Americans thought it quaint.
