Although Eddie and the Hot Rods pre-dated the punk explosion of 1976 and 1977, they were very much a part of it in terms of the themes of their songs, even though they did not share all the same attributes of contemporaries like the Pistols and the Clash. "Teenage Depression" was just one of those songs which aimed to highlight to way in which the prospective audience felt, rather than the way parents, teachers and the record companies told them they ought to feel. In that sense it sits squarely within the punk genre. Solid, and with a driving force to it, this was typical of much that Eddie and the Hot Rods did. Never a band to challenge musical frontiers, it remains a fine example of straight up driving guitar driven teenage-angst pop.
