Often covered - Eric Clapton did a version - this is about as good as it can get for one guitarist and his blues harmonica. The music of Big Bill Broonzy marks the beginnings of a move away from the traditional themes of blues music, woe at the suffering and toils of life, and towards the sort of rhythm and blues which became more popular in the fifties. Broonzy himself was one of the early pioneers who took blues away from its southern, rural roots and brought it to the urban north, making it more popular with white audiences in the process. Interestingly, "Key to the Highway" was originally written by blues pianist Charlie Segar in 12-bar format, but Broonzy modified it for guitar and changed it to an eight-bar format.
