The band known as the S-Haters, an obscure British post-punk outfit of the early eighties, decided to change their name to make it less of a misfit with their sound. What they came up with was the Underlings. Dressed in work overalls and looking for all the part like a bunch of plumbers or electrical engineers, the band produced one album and two EP's before folding for good.
Yet that single, "That Little Girl" , is a fine example of the heavier side of jangle pop. With an infectious melody and some clever hooks, it soon gets under your skin. And yet it never got anywhere in terms of commercial airplay. Perhaps it didn't pay to play up working class roots in the greedy world of Thatcher's Britain, but this song should have had a lot more success that it got.
