It’s amazing to think that coffee, that dark substance that we all know is awful for us, is the second most traded natural commodity next to oil. Well, just as we produce oil there are many countries that produce coffee and have a culture all there own. Putumayo tapped into that a few years back with the original Music From The Coffee Lands and has decided to revisit the many countries that are part of the coffee culture. You will find musicians from such coffee producing countries as Brazil, Angola, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Ethiopia, Columbia, Congo, Martinique, and Indonesia/Java. I am quite amazed at how much these diverse cultures manage to fit together so nicely. This compilation doesn’t sound stretched at any point. In fact these artists are completely complimentary to one another. The only artist on the Coffee Lands that I recognized is newly discovered Gigi from Ethiopia. This is music that has a tropical feel but somewhat laid back. Imagine a crew of coffee bean pickers coming in from a hard days work to a band playing at the plantation. This is what I imagine Putumayo probably had in mind with their successful Coffee Lands compilations.
