Of all the tracks the Hollies put out, "The Air that I Breathe" is undoubtedly their most famous. This fame is justifiable for it is without doubt their best single. Yet it is not widely known that this was issued so late, when the Hollies, essentially a sixties pop outfit, were in decline as far as their chart success goes. We can all recall that soaring vocal in the refrain which still has the power to lift the heart on a grey or sad day.
Sadly for the Hollies, they were on their way out by now. They still played the clubs for a good few years, but their heyday was over and soon they would disappear from general view, retaining an intensely loyal, if small, coterie of hard core fans.
