Maxine Sullivan was one of the first singers, and probably the most successful after Billie Holiday, to combine the blues and jazz into a new fusion of sound. Although primarily known as a jazz singer, "When Your Lover Has Gone" has a distinctive blues rhythm and style about it which shows not only its roots, but also manages to do so in 32 instead of the normal 64 bar format. The song was recorded by many jazz artists including Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday and first appeared in a James Cagney film. However, Maxine Sullivan brings a warmth to it which is rarely found on other performances.
