The Banshees could have positioned themselves as the forerunners of post punk. Instead they faded into oblivion after a brief, but occasionally successful career. Steve Severin, the guitarist, was clearly the band's driving force but he needed a second guitarist and the quest for permanence never gave the band the consistency it needed. Their high point in my view was epitomised in "Hong Kong Garden". This track could have helped them attain that goal had they stuck to this sort of almost perfect single - three minutes of catchy, danceable pop pleasure, led by a perfect jangly guitar. Instead the Banshees went almost industrial in their starkness and never recaptured the up-beat effect of this rather daft song about ordering food from a Chinese takeaway.
