What would have been a mediocre pop song was rescued and elevated to the status of near greatness by that bloody marvellous sax solo. Gerry Rafferty, former front man of mid seventies British folk rockers, the Strawbs, produced one good track in his entire solo career. "Baker Street" was that one track. Even today, this is a staple of classic radio, and that is not surprising. If you want to hear what it would have sounded like without the sax solo, flip it over and play the B-Side. Sadly that track is not up to the same standard and therefore drags the rating down.
