Life for a black person in the rural south was in the early part of the last century was bad enough, but for Blind Boy Fuller it was worse - blindness robbed him of the ability to work. So he turned to music and soon gained a formidable following. His was the music of Piedmont Blues musicians, somewhat different from the delta blues of Mississippi. His songs were rough and ready, straight from the heart and no punches pulled. Often lyrically explicit with double entendres ("Shake It Baby" is a typical example of this), a style known as hokum, Fuller sang about the hard life of a poor blind black man in the south. He was an impressive guitarist and a prolific recording artist.
