On the face of it this is not the sort of song one would expect from Elton John. It is also not the sort of song which you would expect me to like either. However, in the light of his subsequent career, the lavender marriage to an East German female shot-putter, the drugs and the excess marked out by the flamboyant spectacles and the ridiculously theatrical stage outfits, I suppose it takes on added significance. This is Elton, in his own words no less, not a Taupin in sight, starting to come to terms with his sexuality. Beautifully sung and obviously a very personal thing for Elton, it also has a great melody. Yet the lyrics are vague enough for it not to become the sort of gay anthem it could have so easily become. If I have a criticism, it is that the song is just a tad too long.
