Fans of the Rheostatics will have already bought this album because the Rheos breed crazy die-hard fans who rabidly await any output from this talented band. Why aren’t they more prominent in the Canadian music scene then? This remains a mystery while the band has been plugging away at their stellar music for 15+ years now and I still have friends who are knee-deep in independent music who don’t own a single Rheostatics album. This is pathetic! When you listen to the Rheos for the first time it’s like everything is clear for the very first time. Now imagine their best album to date and you have their brand new Night of the Shooting Stars. Yes, I would even declare Stars to be superior to Melville. Melville is still an essential album but this is as good a place as any to get acquainted with this Canadian institution. There are fast songs and slow songs, emotional songs and happy songs. There is even a re-recording of Story of Harmelodia’s (1999’s amazing children’s opus complete with illustrated book) “Song of the Garden. The Rheostatics are a band that aren’t going to change the world but when their dead and gone we will be hearing stories about all the great bands who were influenced by this ingenious band. Boys, your work is not going unnoticed.
