Tape Head is the first post Atlantic album and there's a simplified and freer sound now that they're on a smaller label without any of the major label pressure. 'Groove Machine' sets the tone and groove is definitely the key word here. This is the normally complex and progressive King's X stripped down to their roots. Melodic riffs, catchy harmony filled choruses and rock solid rhythms propel 'Fade,' 'Ono' and 'Higher Than God.' Guitarist Ty Tabor proves again that he is a master of the economical solo, saying a lot with very few notes.

Long time fans may recognize 'Happy' as a new version of the once controversial demo 'Quality Control' that featured the first recorded expletives from the band known at the time for their spiritual views. The band is having fun making music again and it shows in the songs and overall mood. As an added bonus (?!) we get a live cameo from Galactic Cowboys guitarist Wally (Walter Bela) Farkas doing his best Yoko Ono impression from a New York City show on the Ear Candy tour.
