For those of us who grew up in the seventies, Status Quo were synonymous with driving rock. Not just any sort of driving rock, but the sort where each and every single sounded exactly the same as the one which preceeded it. Concepts like imagination and innovation were, it seemed, not in Status Quo's vocabulary. And yet, if you looked back before albums the likes of "Piledriver", you would have seen and heard a very different Status Quo to the one that you were familiar with and that became successful.

Back in the sixties, Quo were a struggling British act who went through a couple of name changes and had to recruit Rick Parfitt to beef up their sound a bit. They finally had a hit with a psychedelic era classic, "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Weird lyrics, spacey sounds and heavy dose of wah-wah pedal, this was the way psychedelic pop was supposed to sound. And yet within a few short years this was all behind them and many Quo devotees at school I knew were totally dismissive of what was probably their best moments.
